Charli Howard, a U.K. Model, has been told by her agency she is too fat and out of shape to model. Her response was to write a social media message blasting the unnamed agency in hopes to bring attention to body shaming.
Charli is 5′ 8″ and a size 2…. Here is what she had to say:
Here’s a big FUCK YOU to my (now ex) model agency, for saying that at 5″8 tall and a UK size 6-8 (naturally), I’m “too big” and “out of shape” to work in the fashion industry.
I will no longer allow you to dictate to me what’s wrong with my looks and what I need to change in order to be “beautiful” (like losing one fucking inch off my hips), in the hope it might force you to find me work.
Ironically, I do love modelling – the people I’ve met, the places I’ve visited and I am proud of the jobs I’ve done. I will continue to do it, but only on my terms. My mental and physical health is of more importance than a number on a scale, however much you wish to emphasise this.
Until (and if) an agency wishes to represent me for myself, my body & the WOMAN I’ve become, give me a call. Until then, I’m off to Nandos.
I can’t help but wonder if the agency is really to blame. I think that until the consumer stops buying into the super skinny trends the agency can not be held responsible for being unable to get her gigs. I’m as guilty as the next girl for buying into the untrainable body goals set for us by the fashion industry…. The question is how do we change it?
Let’s keep in mind this use to be the ideal female body….
I just think it’s so sad. We should celebrate women’s bodies at any shape, this story is going to be so damaging to young girls
